There is this young woman who works in “Utility”. She washes the stacks of dirty dishes/cups, 10+ hours a day! - bless her heart. One day she looks at me and says you look like my mother. She proceeded to show me a picture of her mother, and we do resemble each other somewhat. As a result, she now calls me “Auntie”. I thought how nice it was she thought of me as kinfolk. Since that day, there is a group of 20 Somethings who call me “Auntie”. I’m just rollin’ with it. I consider it as high praise and a demonstration of respect.
There is one young man in particular, though has NEVER called me Auntie, yet I had the rare privilege of standing as his Auntie. His mother died of a sudden heart attack, Friday. So I helped this dynamic, bright, fun loving, young man cope with his tragic grief by helping him with arrangements, packing his bags, and signing off the ship.
There is another woman who works on the ship and everytime I see her I swear I’m looking at myself in 15 years! We look that much alike. All staff have commented to either one of us about our “Twin”. So now we call each other “Sister Twin”. I like her immensely.
Then there is the Hawaiian/Korean/Filipino group that call me “Sister”. Not sure when this started, but I realize I’m just answering to it like I would my own name. It’s nice.
OMG Lisa! Yes, I finally signed onto your blog and so glad I did! First, I miss you loads and after reading your recent blogs, Roman and I laughed so much, I'm coughing just to catch my breath. As for the Name Calling post, that's just family away from home. So touching about the guy who lost his mom. Can't wait to see you and give you a BIG HUG! I'll stay tuned.
ReplyDeleteDamn Girl!!! You're gone for what, 3 weeks and you forget ALL about the fact that you're MY
ReplyDeleteSister Twin? And trust me, I've got the pictures to prove it!
Speaking of 'name calling' it's taken me this long to post a comment because I've been trying to figure out how to get one of those cute little anonymous names so nobody knows it's me and I can say what I really think (in case this ends up published in a book or something)---but of course I can't figure out how they do that so my real name is on this thing (and I don't even know how Google knows my name---that freaked me out). So, since everyone knows it's me, just let me say how much I LOVE your blog---REALLY---I'm not just saying that because my real name is on this thing---I honestly, truly think this is the funniest blog I have ever read. Of course the only other blogs I've ever read deal with environmental disasters---cancer clusters, farmworkers being poisoned by pesticides---you know, just your basic light humor stuff. Seriously, this is great stuff--so revealing---personally, I couldn't figure out why your roommates hadn't mysteriously 'disappeared at sea' long ago until I read about how you were biding your time waiting for the right moment to exact the perfect humiliating revenge on them---and then did it again!---you are my hero and I'm nominating you for a lifetime award of the Facilitated Karma Master title.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment and comments! I didn't set out to be funny, I'm just stating facts as they roll in front of me. If it's funny trust me its an accident!
